Beth El Congregation will honor Dr. Leon and Evelyn Zeitzer at its L’Dor V’Dor Golden Gala, 5:30 p.m. Sunday, March 26, at Beth El Congregation, 1118 W. Glendale Ave., Phoenix. The gala will also celebrate the 50th anniversary of the congregation’s building.

The Zeitzers were both born and raised in Philadelphia and moved from Seattle – where Leon Zeitzer served his residence in the University of Washington’s otolaryngology (ear, nose and throat) program – to Phoenix in 1971 with three daughters – Beth Jo, Harriet and Ellen and joined Beth El when the synagogue on Glendale Avenue was only a few years old. Their son, Mark, was born after their move to Phoenix.

The couple have been active in many Jewish organizations. Leon is a past Beth El president, served as co-chair of the Bureau for Jewish Education, when it was part of the Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix, and was on the board of the American Jewish Committee. He was also on multiple professional committees at various hospitals, was president of the Galen Medical Society and Phi Delta Epsilon Medical Alumni, and served on the board of Temple University Medical Alumni. Evelyn Zeitzer served as president of one of the B’nai B’rith chapters and helped run Beth El’s gift shop on behalf of the Sisterhood.She also served as a treasure and on the board of the American Jewish Committee and co-chaired the Beth El Purim Ball, Shalom Arizona and the King David Gala Ball.
