Summertime is a great opportunity to utilize your grill and bust out the juicy fruits and vegetables. Healthy eating begins with planning meals and snacks in advance. If you can determine what you plan to eat at least one day before, you will make healthier food choices and cut down on the cost of food. When you plan, aim for three meals daily spaced between four to five hours apart.

A great way to include your essential nutrients is by using the plate planner tool found at ChooseMyPlate.gov. The plan fills up half of your plate with non-starchy vegetables (i.e., asparagus, beets, broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, cucumbers, green beans, mushrooms, onions, peppers, spinach, tomatoes, and turnips) and/or fruit. Fill a quarter of your plate with whole grains, breads or starchy vegetables (corn, peas, potatoes or beans). Then, fill up the remaining quarter of your plate with protein. Choose a dairy-rich protein at one meal (yogurt, cheese, and/or milk) and an animal-based protein at another meal to make sure you’re getting in enough calcium. If you are unable to space your meals four to six hours apart, a healthy snack is an option.
