Parshat Beha’alotcha, Numbers 8:1–12:16

On March 2, 1863, Senator James Harlan of Iowa, introduced a resolution to the Senate requesting that President Abraham Lincoln proclaim a National Day of Prayer and Fasting. On March 30, the president signed the proclamation and on Thursday, April 30 of that same year, it was observed throughout the country. In the proclamation, President Lincoln proposed, “We have been preserved, these many years, in peace and prosperity. We have grown in numbers, wealth and power, as no other nation has ever grown. But we have forgotten G-d.”
