Tisha B’Av’s litany of misfortune

Have you ever had a bad day? A really bad day? Collectively, we Jews will observe Tisha B’Av, the Fast of the Ninth Day of Av this coming Monday night (Aug. 4) and Tuesday (Aug. 5), marking the most tragic day in Jewish history.

According to tradition, this was not only the anniversary of the destruction of both Temples in Jerusalem (the first by the Babylonians in 586 BCE and the second by the Romans in the year 70 C.E.), but it was also the anniversary of the tragedy of the spies whose negative report of the Land of Israel resulted in 40 more years of wandering in the desert.
