The Shabbos of vision

Parshot Devarim, Deuteronomy 1:1–3:22

The Torah portion of Devarim is always read on the Shabbos that precedes Tisha B’Av, the day commemorating the destruction of the first and second Beis HaMikdash. This Shabbos is known as Shabbos Chazon — the shabbos of vision. This is because the first word of the Haftorah is chazon, “vision” — the calamitous vision seen by the prophet Isaiah regarding the destruction of the Temple. Traditionally, this Shabbos is a serious prelude to the saddest day in the Jewish calendar.
