‘Prayer at times can be a laboratory’

Jewish spiritual technology is like a freeze-dried wafer. This, according to students of Rabbi Zalman Shachter-Shalomi, was one of his most important teachings.

In other words, the tools of Jewish life (our prayers, our texts, our practices) are like messages sent to us from our sages. The great teachers of old were on fire with spiritual wisdom and passion. Knowing that they could not possibly preserve every detail of their Jewish lives, they distilled their ideas down to their very essences. They packed them up into books and passed them down through the generations.
