Parshat Beshalach, Exodus 13:17–17:16

This week’s Torah portion has numerous storylines, but the most significant and well known is the Jews reciting the song of “Az Yashir,” which gives this Shabbos the special name of “Shabbos Shirah” — the Shabbos of Song. At this point in the Exodus, the Jews are described by the Midrash as being on such a spiritually high plane that even the maidservants were able to see and to recognize G-d on a higher level than the future prophet Yechezkel, who was shown all sorts of awesome prophecies about the end of days.
