I recently returned from the JCCs of North America Biennial conference in Memphis. Valley of the Sun JCC CEO Jay Jacobs, COO Kim Subrin, board member Joyce Goldstein and I brought back a lot of ideas after three days of speakers and workshops with other JCC lay leaders and professionals from around North America. My main takeaway from the conference is that the JCC movement is as strong as ever — JCCs will continue to be a key to future Jewish communal life and a great way to build community.

As far as our own Valley of the Sun JCC, I could not be more excited about where we are and where we are heading. I first joined the board of the JCC in 1999, and I can unequivocally say that we have never been stronger than we are today since opening our current doors in 2002. Operations are financially strong and transparent. Thanks to the incredible turnaround job by Immediate Past Chairman Jonathan Hoffer, we have never been in a better financial position (although that can certainly continue to improve). We are a few membership units away from crossing the 2,000 threshold, a 17 percent increase over the past 14 months. Other than the one week we hosted the JCC Jr. Maccabi Games in 2006, we have never had a better, longer-lasting positive energy vibe permeating throughout the campus than currently exists. Our wonderful staff continues to thrive under very strong leadership. Our security has been vastly improved and the significant investments that have been made in this area are noticeable by all who enter the campus. Our members and donors are proud to be part of The J.
