We wish to address rumors within the community regarding future food service at the Valley of the Sun Jewish Community Center. We have been, and remain, committed to ensuring that all food provided by the café, catering service and future snack shack by the pool be kosher and under supervision. Since we are opening our new and expanded pool area, we are exploring new food and beverage options to best serve our members. The vendor selected will serve kosher food and will be approved by the Greater Phoenix Vaad Hakashruth.

To address this need, we recently sent an RFP [request  for proposals] to several food service vendors within the community, including our current vendor. Very clearly stated in the opening paragraph is the requirement that “All meals will be kosher. If you currently are an approved kosher caterer, or are willing to become approved and interested, please respond to the RFP.”

There have also been questions about whether The J Café or snack shack will be open on Saturdays. The RFP clearly states that possible Saturday hours would only occur “If possible with Vaad.” There is at least one restaurant in Phoenix under Vaad supervision that is open on Saturday. Having the café and/or snack shack open on Saturdays could be an asset to the vibrancy of The J and of service to the community, especially during swim meets and other events.

The J is a welcoming and inclusive community center that respects Jewish values. Expanded hours and kosher menu options would enhance the experience of our members and visitors. We invite you to review our RFP at jewishphoenix.org/kosher.
