The Valley’s pro-Israel community should be heartened by a congressional letter opposing the American Studies Association’s recent decision to boycott Israeli academic institutions. The letter, dated Jan. 17 and addressed to Curtis Marez, president of the ASA, was signed by U.S. Rep. David Schweikert (R-CD6), who forwarded the letter to us with his comments, and 133 other members of Congress. The letter-writing effort was led by Reps. Peter Roskam (R-Ill.), Ted Deutch (D-Fla.), Doug Collins (R-Ga.) and Brad Schneider (D-Ill.). From the Arizona delegation, Reps. Trent Franks (R-CD8) and Matt Salmon (R-CD5) signed on along with Schweikert.

Commenting on the ASA’s move, Schweikert wrote: “I believe their boycott of Israeli academic institutions shows a severe level of disregard for academic freedom and the close support between American and Israeli universities. Isolating a close ally of our country and what we stand for is not a productive route for students and educators alike.”
