Like many of your readers, I am the granddaughter of refugees. My father’s oldest brother was born in a refugee camp in Germany after World War II. Three of my four grandparents were immigrants. All of my grandparents loved this country unreservedly, for it is here that they were able to build a safe, stable home for their children. That is the gift America offered them, and in return, they taught their children and grandchildren that at its best, this country welcomes the stranger and the widow and the orphan.
President Trump’s actions this past week should provoke outcry in the Jewish community. Now is the time for us to speak up. Call your representative and senators today and let them know we’ve seen this before.
