We were disappointed by the front page of the Sept. 22 issue of the Jewish News in which Jewish genetic disease testing by an organization outside of our local community was featured (“Genetic testing emphasized during Tay-Sachs Awareness Month.”) Unfortunately, the article neglected to point out that the Jewish Genetic Diseases Center of Greater Phoenix has been doing this type of testing in our local community for many years.

Founded in 2004 by Dr. Sherman and Andi Minkoff, the JGDC is one of only a few organizations in the nation that provide free prenatal genetic counseling and screening for Jewish genetic diseases. JScreen, as highlighted in the article, is an organization run out of Emory University in Atlanta that provides for genetic screening using a model that differs from ours.
