Jewish War Veterans marching in Veterans Day parade

Anna Selman wrote an insightful and informative article about using a Jewish approach to treat veterans with PTSD (Nov. 10, 2017). It’s mentioned in the postscript that members of the

Valley’s Jewish War Veterans posts would be marching in the Phoenix Veterans Day Parade on November 11. I’d like to clarify that the official JWV policy is, as an organization, that posts are refrained from official participation or representation in any parade on a Shabbat or Jewish holiday.

Here in Phoenix, there was an agreement and understanding over the years with Veteran parade organizers that parades would not be held on a Shabbat for that reason, and has always been in effect. Until this year, and the reason why is unknown. This is the official JWV policy for its posts and departments, but in no way restricts individual veterans from exercising their free will as they see fit if they would like to participate on their own.
