Lauding Dr. Zinn, a mensch

The Orthodox Jewish community in Phoenix is one that is filled with many young families. Many years before all these “newcomers,” there was a man who planted and nurtured the seeds of Yiddishkeit here in Phoenix. I was recently in Brooklyn and was honored to visit with him after many years – he is Dr. Sheldon Zinn. If you’ve been here for over 10 years, you surely remember him and his late wife, Joan. They were a match made in heaven. Both were two of the sweetest people you would ever meet. They raised a frum family here, when it wasn’t so easy to do. Dr. Zinn was a major force in establishing the Phoenix Hebrew Academy. He was a learned man, who always had time to learn and teach others in a patient, calm manner. As an older man, he walked miles, even in the summer, to read the Torah for Shaarei Zedek. The house was a welcoming reservoir of Torah living in the desert. I just wanted to give recognition to this special mensch. If not for his efforts, the Orthodox Jewish community would not be what it is today. Kol hakavod to Dr. Sheldon Zinn.
