In the week before Election Day, there is ample reason to be dejected as we seemingly reach the nadir of political discourse in the public square. Still, I choose to count my blessings for being an American Jew.

First of all, for the privilege of living in the greatest democracy on earth, we could say, dayeinu. With all the imperfections of our United States of America, honestly, who would trade in their U.S. passport? I think of the journey of my grandparents and great grandparents, of blessed memory, who, because they were Jews, fled Riga and Kiev for the promise of our shores. Imagine the sight, entering New York harbor, of the Statue of Liberty coming into view. Lady Liberty is no less a beacon of hope today for aspiring Americans.
