Ears wide open: Talk with an Egyptian

Shoehorned into the center seat in a row of three smack-dab in the middle of a jumbo jet, I ordered a glass of red wine. The fellow in the aisle seat to my left did the same. When the drinks were served, I raised my glass and said, “Salute,” the three-syllable Italian pronunciation, that more or less means, “to your health.”

He thought, I said the Spanish, “Salud!” and asked me, “Did you think I was Mexican?” What an icebreaker. It was early in a flight that would last 10 to 11 hours, and it sparked a conversation that taught me something about anti-Semitism and the nature of nationalism in Egypt.
