Ruth Elaine Schwarz (85) passed away on August 5, 2017. Ruth was born in Huntington, New York on April 4, 1932. Ruth moved with her husband and children to Scottsdale in 1966 from Long Island, New York. Ruth was a dedicated and beloved teacher in the Scottsdale School District for over 25 years. She taught elementary grades and special reading throughout her tenure. Ruth graduated with honors from Cortland State College in New York and remained an active member of the Alpha Sigma sorority. Ruth continued her education in Arizona, completing her Master’s Degree at ASU and her Administrative Degree from NAU. She enjoyed a full life with her family and attracted many, many friends with her always smiling face and the brightness of her smile brought happiness to all that were fortunate to have known her. Ruth was active in the community for many years including Hadassah Women’s Group of Phoenix, Jewish Federation, and the Kertzer Scholarship program at ASU. In the past 10 years she gracefully dealt with, and finally succumbed to, the affliction of Alzheimer’s Disease. Ruth is preceded in death by her husband, Edward, and parents Betty and Harry Kertzer. She leaves behind, to continue her shining light, daughter Melissa (Missy) Schwarz Urlaub (Jim); daughter Caryn Schwarz Hite (Rod), 3 grandchildren; Jeffrey Urlaub, Jennifer Urlaub Mackanin (Shane) and Kathryn Hite; and sister Judy Kertzer Uhrman (Arthur). Special thanks to the staff and owner of Tuscan Place for the exceptional love and care that they provided to her. In lieu of flowers a donation to the Alzheimer’s Association or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital would be appreciated. Ruth will be missed greatly by her family, her friends, and all of those whose lives she touched. Services were held at Sinai Mortuary Chapel on Monday, August 7, 2017.
