Joel N. Smith of Scottsdale died on July 29, 2018, at the age of 82. Raised in New Haven, Connecticut. He served in the U.S. Air Force and, while stationed at Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany, met and married his wife, Gloria (Krain) Smith. Joel and Gloria settled in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where Joel graduated from Temple University and later raised their family. In 1971, they moved to Wayne, New Jersey, and Joel became active in the Jewish community. Joel served as president of Temple Beth Tikvah in Wayne (1989-1991) and was honored in 1985 as the United Jewish Appeal Worker of the Year by the Jewish Federation of North Jersey. Joel and Gloria moved to Scottsdale in 1998, and for a period Joel served on the staff of Congregation Beth Israel.

In addition to Gloria, his wife of 60 years, he is survived by his three children, Marc Smith, Helaine Hollander and Betsy Smith-Studer, and six grandchildren.
