The Arizona State University Center for Jewish Studies now offers a Certificate in Adult Jewish Learning. As part of the program, the student is required to complete eight courses, which are held at various locations. The courses will be offered in eight-week sessions, with one class per week.

The fall classes are:

  • "Facing Futility: Examining Jewish End of Life Choices Cross-Culturally": 7-9 p.m. Mondays, Oct. 15-Dec. 10, at Temple Beth Sholom of the East Valley, 3400 N. Dobson Road, Chandler. Taught by Marc Krell, TBS-EV religious school director.
  • "Jewish History and Identity in Modern Times": 10 a.m.-noon Wednesdays, Oct. 17-Dec. 12, at the Cutler-Plotkin Jewish Heritage Center, 122 E. Culver St., Phoenix. Taught by Lawrence Bell, executive director of the Arizona Jewish Historical Society.
  • "Post Holocaust Memory": 2-4 p.m. Thursdays, Oct. 18-Dec. 13, at the Cutler-Plotkin Jewish Heritage Center. Taught by Martin Beck Matustik, Lincoln professor of Ethics and Religion and co-director of the Center for Critical Theory and Cultural Studies at ASU.
  • "The Holocaust and Civil Rights": An online class that begins Monday, Oct. 15. Taught by Deborah Kaye, an adjunct lecturer in Judaic studies at the University of Arizona's Arizona Center for Judaic Studies.

Each course is $180.

The new program receives financial support from ASU's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and is in partnership with the Arizona Jewish Historical Society, the Bureau of Jewish Education, Temple Beth Sholom of the East Valley, Valley Beit Midrash and the Valley of the Sun Jewish Community Center.
