Women's event looks at activism, philanthropy and volunteering

The Women's Philanthropy fall event, with a theme of "Think Globally, Act Locally," will feature Susan Stern, who was named by the White House this year to chair the President's Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships. She will discuss making a difference through philanthropy, volunteering and activism. Carey Pena, anchorwoman and investigative reporter of KTVK-Channel 3, will be the emcee.

The women's event will be held 7-9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22, at the Ina Levine Jewish Community Campus, 12701 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale. Cost is $18, which includes dessert. Guests are asked to bring a nonperishable Rosh Hashana food item for the Kivel Campus of Care Food Pantry. Register online by Sept. 19 at jewishphoenix.org or call 480-634-4900. EVJCC Shabbat, parents' night out

The East Valley JCC will hold a family Shabbat dinner 6-7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 16. The preschool classes will perform special Shabbat songs. Families should bring a dairy or pareve dinner, and the EVJCC will provide dessert and drinks.

The center will also have a Parents' Night Out 6-11 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17. JCC staffers will lead an evening of crafts, movies and games. 'Healers, hucksters & heroes'

Dr. Robert Kravetz will speak about "Arizona Territorial Medicine: Healers, Hucksters & Heroes, Medicine in the Arizona Territory," 7:30-9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15, at the Cutler-Plotkin Jewish Heritage Center, 122 E. Kehillah of AZ plans trip to Israel

Kehillah of Arizona will host a 14-day trip to Israel Feb. 19-March 4, 2012, led by Rabbi Bonnie Sharfman, who once worked as a licensed Israel tour guide.
