Haven House to mark 10 years

Haven House will hold a luncheon and story time for families on Saturday, Nov. 13, to celebrate its 10th anniversary as the Valley's first transitional shelter for battered and homeless women and children.

The "Celebrate Me Home" luncheon will begin at 11:30 a.m. at the Hilton Scottsdale Resort and Villa, 6333 N. Scottsdale Road, followed by the story time at 12:45 p.m.

Among the celebrity guests will be emcee Wally "Famous" Amos, Phoenix Mercury player Lisa Harrison, Arizona Diamondback Jay Bell, former Phoenix Sun Jeff Cook and ventriloquist Dan Horn. The Phoenix Thunderbirds will donate $228,000. The shelter's name is being changed to Thunderbird Haven House.

The storytelling will feature readings of the book "Fly Away Home," Haven House success stories and the children's book, "Love You Forever."

Haven House houses 16 women and their children for up to 24 months. The women must be in school, receiving job training or employed.

Haven House was founded in 1989 by the YWCA board of directors. Start-up money came from a fund-raiser. One big supporter of Haven House was Herman Lewkowitz, brother of Barbara Lewkowitz, YWCA executive director.
