Fund open to all Jewish schools
Editor:The story headlined "Local Jewish schools may reap increased donations" (Jewish News, Oct. 15) reported that the Jewish Community Day School Scholarship Fund, a school tuition organization eligible to receive contributions subject to Arizona's innovative $500 tax credit, is a "joint venture" of the Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix and four local Jewish day schools. In fact, participation in the fund is open to all Jewish day schools in Arizona, regardless of movement or affiliation, and all such schools have been invited and encouraged to join. To date, seven schools have chosen to work together in supporting the fund: the Beth El Center for Early Childhood Education, the (proposed) Jewish Community High School, the King David School, the Solel Pardes School, the Temple Beth Israel Chanen Preschool, the Tri-City Jewish Community Center Day School, and the Valley of the Sun JCC Preschool. We hope that the other Jewish day schools also will join the fund, allowing the entire Jewish community to unite in making Jewish day school education affordable for all of our children, and allowing parents more freedom to choose. Bennett Evan Cooper Treasurer Jewish Community Day School Scholarship Fund Peace with Syria comes with price
Editor:I am writing in response to Marty Latz's column, "Israel on brink of peace with Syria" (Jewish News, Oct. 15), in which he wrote, "Israel must ensure its agreements now are worth more than the paper on which they are printed." Syria is governed by a minority dictatorship which makes use of draconian means to oppress the population and annihilate all opposition. How good can any peace agreement signed with Syria be? Over the past 25 years, peace has existed on the Israeli-Syrian border because of the topography which creates defensible borders. Strategic parity is created by the presence of Israeli Defense Forces troops only 60 kilometers from Damascus. This is a constant deterrent to Syrian aggression. To give up the Golan Heights is to repeat the errors of the past. Negotiating a contractual peace with Syria demands the utmost caution. Mel Myland Phoenix Reader sorry to see group go Editor: I am sorry that Rabbi Robert Kravitz had to dissolve Mainstream Arizona (Jewish News, Oct. 22). I guess there are more important issues. Even though I couldn't be one of the members, I was always interested in Mainstream. Marian Levine Phoenix Fisher's bestseller defies belief
Editor:Among other absurdities in Eddie Fisher's book (Jewish News, Oct. 15), becoming "the Jewish Sinatra" convinced me that drugs did fry his brains! Having made the New York Times bestseller list, I'm at a loss as to why it wasn't listed under science fiction. Rochelle Koenigsberg Phoenix |
