Beth El, ASU to offer study programBeth El Congregation and Arizona State University will offer a program of studying Jewish texts and content beginning in November.Four scholars will discuss key texts in American Jewish culture at the congregation, 1118 W. Glendale Ave., Phoenix. The scholars will speak at Saturday morning worship services, with discussions shared later over lunch. The first visiting scholar will be Professor Jack Kugelmass, director of ASU's Jewish Studies Program, who will talk about "Television 'Dramadies' as Jewish Texts" on Nov. 13. The service begins at 9 a.m., with Torah portion study beginning at 10 a.m. Participants can then join Kugelmass for lunch and discussion. For reservations, call 602-944-3359. Other talks and related discussions will be: Jan. 15, ASU Professor Esther Romeyn, who will talk about "Becoming American and the Etiquette of Ethnicity at the Turn of the Century"; Feb. 12, Professor Emily Miller Budick, head of the Department of American Studies at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, who will discuss "African American and Israeli 'Others' in the Construction of the Jewish American Identity"; and March 18, Professor Charles Dellheim, director of ASU's Interdisciplinary Humanities Program, who will speak about "Marketing Modernism: How New York Jewish Publishers Transformed the Western Canon." |
