Four professors to teach at 'Chai Academy'

Four current and former Arizona State University professors will present classes at Temple Chai's fall "Chai Academy," an eight-week course beginning Wednesday, Oct. 13.

The classes meet from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesdays and cost $5 for congregation members and $25 for non-members. The classes will be taught at Temple Chai, 4645 E. Marilyn Road in Phoenix.

The professors and their classes are:

  • Jack Kugelmass, director of ASU's Jewish Studies Program, will teach "Envisioning the Old Country, Part 1: Molly Pecon in 'East and West' " on Oct. 13, "Envisioning the Old Country, Part 2: Maurice Schwartz in 'Uncle Moses' " on Nov. 3, "Envisioning the Old Country, Part 3: Rod Steiger in 'The Pawnbroker' " on Nov. 10, and "Envisioning the Old Country, Part 4: Billy Crystal in 'The Night Train to Moscow.' "

  • Charles Dellheim, director of ASU's Interdisciplinary Humanities Program, will teach "Shylock's Shadow" on Oct. 20 and "Next Year in Paris" on Oct. 27.

  • Gordon Weiner, professor emeritus from ASU's History Department and former director of ASU's Jewish Studies Program, will speak on "The Other Israel" on Nov. 17.

  • Esther Romeyn, who teaches American Studies in the Interdisciplinary Program, will discuss "The Four Functions of Jewish Humor" on Dec. 8.
