Board picks new name for day school

The Solomon Schechter Day School Board has chosen "The King David School" as the new name for the institution effective July 1.

The name was chosen by the school board at its Feb. 10 meeting. The effective date coincides with when the school officially disaffiliates from the Conservative movement's Solomon Schechter Day School Association.

Richard Marmor, the school board's executive vice president, said the name was chosen from 72 possibilities nominated by students, parents, school staffers and administrators. Ben Cooper, chairman of the school board's Judaic studies Committee, said the board picked that name primarily because King David's reign marked a period of great unity for the Jewish people and inspired a rebirth of religious learning.

Marmor said board members also liked "King David" because it's a name shared by several well-regarded independent Jewish day schools.

Beginning with the 1999-2000 academic year, the school will serve students in grades 1 through 8. Plans call for the school to move from Beth El Congregations to facilities at Temple Beth Israel, 10460 N. 56th St., Scottsdale. The school has scheduled an open house for 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 25, at the temple. Final agreements with Beth Israel, however, remain to be inked.

The school will begin accepting registration applications from continuing students and their siblings on March 1. Applications from new students will be accepted starting March 15.
