Hadassah receives grant from Komen FoundationThe local chapters of Hadassah have received a grant from the Komen Foundation to conduct their nationally acclaimed youth breast health awareness program, Check It Out. The program will be held at local high schools throughout the Valley. Check It Out is designed to educate young women in the importance of breast self-examination and keeping their bodies healthy. The program will feature a speaker who is a breast cancer survivor, as well as a health care provider who will speak about taking responsibility for one's own body and the importance of breast self-examination. Also speaking will be a representative of Hadassah, the largest women's membership organization in the United States. A video on breast-examination provided by the American Cancer Society will be presented. Each young woman will receive a kit containing a plastic gel model of a breast with two lumps. One lump is detectable only by touch and the other only by sight when the model is held up to the light, as if by mammogram. The kit also includes educational literature and a plastic shower card developed by Hadassah that illustrates the technique of breast self-examination. |
