Come for the view, walk for the cause

The Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America, Desert Botanical Garden and St. Mary's Food Bank have joined together to raise funds for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) Saturday, Jan. 24 at Desert Botanical Garden and Papago Park, 1201 N. Galvin Pkwy., Phoenix.

More than 200 walkers are expected to enjoy the walk amid the indigenous plants to raise funds for Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis - intestinal diseases known collectively as inflammatory bowel disease. Registration for this annual 10K begins at 8 a.m. Those who bring a can of food for St. Mary's Food Bank will pay a reduced registration fee of $15. Those without a can of food are asked to donate $25.

Considered a "young person's illness," IBD affects most people between the ages of 20 and 40 years old and often lands its victims in the hospital for weeks at a time due to severe blood loss, an inability to properly digest food, extreme abdominal pain and intense diarrhea. Nearly 45,000 Arizonans have IBD.

The Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America is a non-profit health organization committed to finding the cause and developing a cure for IBD. The Arizona Chapter funds national IBD research and local education programs.
