Key to success

A new survey identifies networking as a highly effective ingredient in career advancement.

The survey, which includes responses from 1,400 chief financial officers, shows that the majority - 80 percent - believe that networking with others in their field had been instrumental to their professional success.

"Those who actively seek to expand their skill set and knowledge base through industry contacts increase their visibility in the professional community and demonstrate leadership abilities to their employers, which can ultimately lead to promotions and increased compensation," said Max Messmer, chairman of Accountemps, the temporary staffing service for accounting, finance and bookkeeping professionals that developed the survey.

Messmer identified trade associations and community groups as potential networking avenues. Other networking opportunities can be explored by conducting research on the Internet, reading local newspapers and business journals, and contacting associations for event schedules.
