Scroll findings bring religion full circle

Editor:
I enjoyed Anne's Brady's article headlined "Scroll scholars say gospels repeat pre-Jesus texts" (Jewish News, Nov. 13).

In universal history, no one can equal Moses, who co-created and established a nation in exile, a nation founded on the principle that all law is one. This led Judaism to embrace the Mosaic ideal that mankind is required to be in harmony with both God and the world.

The Mosaic perception of reality included a healthy fear of and subjugation to God, who alone is law unto himself. The Essenes, the Mosaic sect of Jesus, lived this like no other sect before or since, as the Dead Sea Scrolls illuminated.

With the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls, it seems we have all come full circle.

Too many obstacles on the road to peace

Editor:
Elie Wiesel, where are you when we need you now? I refer to the constant bickering and creation of impediments to the execution of the Oslo accords. Recently, Arab land was confiscated in order to build a bypass road to a settlement of a handful of radical Israeli settlers who decided to live there among thousands of Arabs because "God gave it to us." The cost of building, maintaining and defending such settlements must be exorbitant. Is it worth disregarding the civil rights of Arabs in order to satisfy the desires of the settlers?

How many more stunts does Bibi Netanyahu have in store to railroad the execution of the peace agreement?

Soviet Jews still in need of help

Editor:
This is an urgent request for help from the Jewish communities of the former Soviet Union. The political and economic chaos has greatly affected the Jews in every republic. Elderly people are not receiving their pensions, leaving them with no funds to buy food and medications. Since the banks and the mail are unreliable and unsafe, money and supplies must be hand delivered.

Anyone traveling to Russia, Ukraine, or any of the former Soviet republics is asked to help by serving as a courier. Contact the Chicago Action for Soviet Jewry at 847-433-0144.
