Joel Breshin, regional director of the Anti-Defamation League, is among five people who were named this week by the Phoenix Human Relations Council to receive the Living the Dream Award, which recognizes individuals who have exemplified the ideals and teaching of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. by embracing cultural diversity, promoting social and economic justice, defending civil rights and enhancing the dignity of all people.

Breshin will receive the award at the 13th annual Mayor's Imagine the Dream event, paying tribute to King and those who share his dedication to promoting human rights and equal opportunity, at 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 15, at Phoenix Symphony Hall.

"I'm really excited about getting it," Breshin said of the honor. "This is one of the most important things that has ever happened to me."

Breshin said the annual awards event "sets the stage for people to work together ... by saying there are many people out there working for human rights, by saying let's discuss and begin talking to each other about areas of mutual concern."

Meanwhile, Evelyn Smith, who leads Interfaith Study Missions to Israel and who founded the Hispanic/Jewish Coalition and the Black/Jewish Coalition, was one of two people selected to receive the Calvin C. Goode Lifetime Achievement Award, named for the former Phoenix city councilman.

This award, which recognizes individuals who make Phoenix a better place through a lifetime commitment to the ideals and teachings of King, also will be presented at the Imagine the Dream event.

Receiving the Living the Dream award along with Breshin will be: Robert Hegyi, who has championed the rights of people infected with the HIV virus and who founded the Arizona AIDS Fund-Trust; Bill Mosley, a reporter with KTVK-TV Channel 3, who has raised funds for a broad range of causes; Ann Hart, a school teacher and the founder of the Black Women's Task Force; and, posthumously, Manuel Luis Ortega, a Hispanic activist and entertainer.

Also receiving the Calvin Goode award is Rod Ambrose, a professional writer, director and performer, who serves on the board of directors of CITY Dads Inc., a gang and dropout prevention program, and conducts drug abuse workshops for the city, among other things.
