Channel 8 picks up PBS Jewish cooking show

"Jewish Cooking in America with Joan Nathan," a 26-part series from the Public Broadcasting System, will begin airing Nov. 20 on KAET-TV Channel 8, at 2 p.m. on Fridays.

The series, based on Nathan's cookbook, "Jewish Cooking in America" (Knopf, $35), uses food to explore Jewish culture and history in the United States. It highlights the integral role of food in binding family and community throughout the generations. Working with cooks who share their time-honored recipes, Nathan reveals the traditions and customs that make Jewish cooking unique, and their impact on modern Jewish life.

In a sort-of culinary travelogue, Nathan identifies restaurants, delicatessens and kosher kitchens throughout the country where Jewish cuisine has assumed its various flavors and forms. Among the celebrities featured are violin virtuoso Itzhak Perlman, comedian Jerry Stiller and actors Mandy Patinkin and Elliot Gould. Celebrity chefs include Jim Cohen of the Phoenician.

Each program is 30 minutes long. The series began airing on many PBS stations in September. A "Best Of" video is available for $24.95, plus shipping and handling. For the video, to order Nathan's cookbook of the same name, or for an audio tape of "Traditional Sounds of Jewish Klezmer Music" (which includes the show's theme), call (800) 235-3000.
