Ride to benefit homeless kids at Pappas School

The third annual Ride for the Children will take place on Sunday, Nov. 15, at Desert Horizon Park, 56th Street and Paradise Lane.

Organizers are seeking 300 riders to raise $50,000 to provide emergency medical aid for the pupils at Thomas J. Pappas Elementary School, which serves children of homeless families.

Sign-up will begin at 7 a.m., and the race starts at 8 a.m.

All riders must make a pledge or receive pledges of at least $50 by Nov. 10. Riders may chose to ride 10, 25 or 50 miles. The course is mostly flat and winds through Paradise Valley. Water will be provided along the route, and Bashas' is donating a post-ride breakfast.

Registration information is available at Bashas', the Coffee Plantation and most area bike shops, or call the Rogers Group Inc., 788-5200.

Contributors interested in making a tax-deductible pledge may make their check payable to Thomas J. Pappas School and mail it to Ride for Children, c/o The Rogers Group Inc., 4939 E. Aire Libre, Scottsdale 85254. Contributors are asked to include their name, address and phone number.

The school was founded in 1990. Last year, it served more than 500 homeless pupils. Public schools do not accept children without a permanent address, so children living in shelters are placed at the Pappas School.
