Chabad of Phoenix opens thrift store

Chabad of Phoenix is opening a thrift store to support the organization's outreach programs. The store begins operations Sunday, Oct. 18 on the northwest corner of Cave Creek and Sweetwater roads.

Chabad leaders say the idea of a thrift store has been discussed for several years by Rabbi Zalman Levertov, Chabad's regional director in Arizona, and Jeff Joffe of A. Joffe Furniture Manufacturing.

"Chabad had a thrift store once before, but it was unsuccessful because it relied on volunteers," said Joffe, project director of the new store. "Now that we have Tzahi Shohat, who will be there full time, I am confident that the thrift store will be successful."

Shohat, a Chabad congregant who is the store's full-time operations manager, said the store will still need volunteers to help out.

"For now we are starting small to see if the thrift store will catch on," Shohat said. "We will need all the help we can get in the beginning, and anything that anyone can do to help will be greatly appreciated."

Shohat said the store is starting in a fairly small property, but organizers hope to move to a bigger space once business volume picks up. He said the organization also hopes eventually to open up more stores to support other Chabads in Arizona.

The store is accepting donations of clothing and household goods. Donations are tax-deductible, and items need to be clean and in good condition. The store is located at 13002 N. Cave Creek Road, Suite 2.

Store hours will be Sunday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The store will be closed on Shabbat and holidays.

Those making donations should first call the store at 494-6208.
