OU offers advice for employing disabled

The National Jewish Council for the Disabled, a program of the Orthodox Union, is offering a free tip sheet to help employers become more inclusive in their hiring practices.

"Being an inclusive employer is not simply a 'nice' thing to do; it is our mandate and our responsibility as American citizens," said Dr. Jeff Lichtman, the council's national director. "It is also a highly effective way to access a pool of dedicated, hard-working and talented individuals."

Geared to corporations as well as small and big businesses, the tip sheet - titled "Strategies for Corporate Inclusion: Suggestions on How to Employ the Disabled" - offers advice including:

  • When a position becomes available, disseminate vacancy announcements to disability-related agencies.

  • State clearly in job advertisements your company's interest in receiving applications from people with disabilities.

  • Develop targeted internships and job programs for people with disabilities.

  • Conduct sensitivity training and awareness programs for your staff.

The disability council's Vocational Resources and Job Placement Program helps integrate Jewish individuals with special needs into the work force through vocational counseling and programs for job placement, coaching and support.
