Local pianist signs up for two-year gig with Scottsdale Symphony

Pianist Nicholas Carey will perform in the opening concerts of the Scottsdale Symphony Orchestra's "Splendor of Tschaikovsky" season, and has agreed to be the symphony's artist-in-residence for two years.

Carey will perform Tschaikovsky's Symphony #5 and Beethoven's "Emperor" concerto at 8 p.m. on Sept. 21, 22 and 23. The Sept. 21 performance will be in the Desert Mountain High School auditorium, 12575 E. Via Linda. On Sept. 22 and 23, performances will be at the Scottsdale Center for the Arts, 7380 E. Second St.

In addition to performing with the symphony, as artist-in-residence, Carey will present solo recitals, chamber orchestra programs and master classes for keyboard students, both privately and in the schools.

A graduate of the ASU School of Music, Carey has studied since at Indiana University and with Maria Curcio in London. He returned to Arizona under the management and counsel of Joyce Gant. In May, the Scottsdale Symphony released its fifth recording on compact disc, featuring Carey performing with the symphony on Grieg's Piano Concerto in A-Minor, Opus 60 and Beethoven's Piano Concerto #4 in G Minor. And the CD includes Carey performing Schumann's "Arabesque" for solo piano.

To order tickets by phone, call 945-8071 (Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.). You may also contact the Scottsdale Symphony by fax (946-8770) at its Web site (www.scotsymph.org) or by mail at P.O. Box 460, Scottsdale 85252.
