AJTC holds auditions, wins nominations, meets with JCCA in New York

Janet Arnold, producing director of Arizona Jewish Theatre Company and membership vice-president of the Association for Jewish Theater, recently visited New York with her fellow association board members to confirm its new alliance with the Jewish Community Centers Association.

The two groups have joined forces in an effort to encourage the establishment of additional Jewish theaters and to encourage the current resurgence of Jewish theater in the United States. They will work together on efforts to revitalize arts programs and to provide advocacy and networking for independent Jewish theaters.

The JCCA will print and distribute newsletters and other materials for the association, and plans are in the works to coordinate the two groups' annual conventions in Philadelphia in October of 1999. The association's conference this year was in Phoenix.

This weekend, Arizona Jewish Theatre Co. is holding auditions for its upcoming production of "Kuni-Leml," a modern adaptation of an 1880s Yiddish play. Needed are: two women in their 20s, one a soprano and one a "belter" and/or metzo; two men between the ages of 40 and 55, one a low baritone and one tenor; and four men between the ages of 25 and 35, two baritones, one tenor (or high baritone) and one low baritone.

All those auditioning should bring a head shot and resume; they will be asked to present a comic monologue lasting 60 to 90 seconds. Equity actors will audition from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 30, and non-Equity actors from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Singing auditions will be from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 31.

Rehearsals start Oct. 12. Performances will be Nov. 7-22 at the Herberger Theater Stage West.

General auditions for the rest of the AJTC season will be Sunday, Sept. 13.

Appointments are necessary to audition. Call 264-0402.

Meanwhile, AJTC announced that it received 13 AriZoni award nominations this year, including seven for its production of "Fiddler on the Roof," three for "The Twilight of the Golds," and three for "Broadway Bound."

The AriZoni Theatre Award of Excellence ceremony will be Monday, Sept. 14, at the Herberger Theater Center in downtown Phoenix. Tickets are $12. Call the Herberger at 252-8497.
