The hills are alive at Herberger, as Valley Youth Theatre opens musical

Valley Youth Theatre will present "The Sound of Music," opening at the Herberger Theater's Center Stage, 222 E. Monroe St. in Phoenix, today (Aug. 21) and continuing through Sunday, Aug. 30.

Against the backdrop of a looming World War II, the young postulant/governess Maria takes the Von Trapp family under her wing and helps the seven children melodically warm their way into their father's stern heart. Songs (by Richard Rogers and Oscar Hammerstein) include "Do-Re-Mi," "My Favorite Things" and "Edelweiss."

Tickets are $11-$13. Reservations are required. Call 252-8497.

Valley Youth Theatre was forced last month to move out of its home at Tower Plaza because the mall is being demolished. The nonprofit theater organization, which provides live community theater activities for children ages 7 to 19, is moving in December to its new home at 525 N. First St. in downtown Phoenix.

For more information on Valley Youth Theatre, call 253-8188.
