Heard Museum North displays kachinas from Goldwater Collection

A new exhibit opening Aug. 15 at the Heard Museum North, a Scottsdale branch location of the Heard Museum, "Cloud Messengers: Hopi Kachina Dolls," features more than 200 kachina dolls, including some donated by the late former U.S. Sen. Barry Goldwater, and a selection of photographs taken by Goldwater on the Hopi reservation.

A life trustee of the Heard Museum, Goldwater donated his personal collection of 437 Hopi kachina dolls to the museum in 1964. In 1994, he donated an archive of more than 1,000 of his photographs and negatives.

The "Cloud Messengers" exhibit is designed to educate visitors about the meaning and importance of kachina dolls and spirits in Hopi culture and tradition.

The museum's North Scottsdale branch is located at the el Pedregal Festival Marketplace on Scottsdale Road at the Carefree Highway. Hours are Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.

Call 252-8840.
