U.S. peace move awaited

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told Cabinet ministers this week that Israel is waiting for an initiative from Washington to jump-start the moribund peace talks. Israel reportedly believes that the United States should support a smaller third pullback from the West Bank in exchange for a larger Israeli redeployment this time around. Meanwhile, the Clinton administration has been working to lower Palestinian expectations regarding the pullbacks, according to the Israel daily newspaper Ha'aretz.

After talks in Cairo June 2 with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on the stalled talks, Israeli Defense Minister Yitzchak Mordechai said the Jewish state can no longer delay a decision on a further redeployment from the West Bank.
