Temple Solel is gearing up for the dedication of its new William Bruce Silverman Education Center on Sunday, Sept. 14.

There will be a brief dedication and tour of the new building beginning at 10 a.m., followed by refreshments. The event is open to the community.

The new facility was built to accommodate a growing number of students in the temple's youth education programs - a number topping 500, according to Bonnie Morris, director of Temple Solel's day and religious schools.

The new structure, attached to the temple's original facility, adds an additional 4,300 square feet of space for classrooms and offices, Morris said.

"It's aesthetically beautiful with natural lighting. There is a computer lab in each classroom, a new school office complex (that includes) a series of offices for school administration, the school nurse and more," Morris said.

A new "eco-kosher" playground also was built. "It is an ecologically kosher playground (because it is) mostly made out of recycled materials," Morris explained. "That has expanded the existing playground that we had here at Solel considerably."
Ground was broken on the new structure in February of this year - at about the same time the capital campaign kicked into gear, Morris said.

The building is paid for in full, as congregants were able to raise the funds - "about a quarter of a million dollars," Morris said - to cover the cost of construction.

The new education center is named in memory of William Bruce Silverman, a former Temple Solel member who was killed in an automobile accident last spring at the age of 29, Morris said. Another part of the upcoming dedication, she added, is the Raker Religious School that is being sponsored by a donation from Jerry and Beverly Raker, two longtime members of the congregation.

Classes were held in the new facility for the first time on Aug. 15.
