Passages sets speaker schedule

The schedule of speakers for Passages, the Bureau of Jewish Education's adult education lecture series, has been set for the winter/spring 1997 season, featuring prominent lecturers on diverse topics.

Author, talk show host and Jewish philosopher Dennis Prager will discuss "Judaism: Liberal or Conservative or Uniquely Jewish?" at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 12 at Beth El Congregation, 1118 W. Glendale Ave., Phoenix. Prager has described his mission in life as "to get people obsessed with what is right and wrong."

Lawrence Schiffman, a professor at New York University renowned for his research on the unpublished Dead Sea Scrolls, will discuss "The Dead Sea Scrolls: What They Say About Judaism and Christianity," at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 2 at Temple Solel, 6805 E. McDonald Drive, Paradise Valley.

Author John Loftus will speak at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 23, at Temple Chai, 4645 E. Marilyn Road, Phoenix, on "The Secret War Against the Jews." Loftus was a prosecutor with the U.S. Justice Department when he discovered and exposed American cooperation with Nazis accused of war crimes. He will discuss how American Jews have been spied upon and how Israel was set up for the Iran-Contra Affair.

Soul music
Machaya Klezmer Band will provide an afternoon of Klezmer music, the soul music of Eastern European Jews, beginning at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 16 at Temple Beth Shalom, 12202 101st Ave., Sun City.

Rabbi Harold Shulweis, senior rabbi of California's Valley Beth Shalom and author of numerous books, will discuss "For Those Who Can't Believe, Why Believe?" at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, March 30 at Beth El.

Public policy analyst Ellen Cannon will discuss "Now that Clinton Is Elected, What's in Store for U.S.-Israeli Relations and Can There Be Peace Between Arabs and Israel -- and How?" at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, April 6 at Temple Emanuel of Tempe, 5801 S. Rural Road, Tempe.

Why be Jewish
The season's final lecturer will be Rabbi David Wolpe, a teacher at the Jewish Theological Seminary, speaking on "Why Be Jewish?" He will talk at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, April 13 at Temple Chai, 4645 E. Marilyn Road, Phoenix.

Series tickets are $50 per person, which include all seven lectures. Individual tickets are $10 per lecture. Patron levels are also available.
