Friedman to present lectures exploring who wrote the BibleA noted author and biblical scholar whose works have been called "dazzling pieces of detective work" will present three free public lectures Tuesday and Wednesday, Nov. 19 and 20 as the Eckstein scholar-in-residence at Arizona State University.Richard Elliot Friedman's books "Who Wrote the Bible?" and "The Disappearance of God" received wide acclaim and were cited among the best books of the year by the Washington Post and Publishers Weekly. Friedman will discuss "Who Wrote the Bible?" at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19 at the Kerr Cultural Center, 6110 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale. A reception will follow. He will speak on kabbalah and the "Big Bang" at 3:15 p.m. Nov. 19 and "The Bible: Literature or History?" at 9:40 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20 in the Pima Room of the ASU Memorial Union. The Katzin Professor of Jewish civilization and professor of Hebrew and comparative literature at the University of California, San Diego, Friedman holds a master's degree in Hebrew literature from the Jewish Theological Seminary and a doctorate from Harvard University in Hebrew Bible and Near-Eastern languages and civilizations. The Eckstein scholar-in-residence is funded by a contribution to ASU's Jewish Studies Program by Liese Eckstein and her husband, the late Albert Eckstein.
