Maintaining and creating Jewish identity, and connections in modern families, will be explored at a program of the American Jewish Committee's Sunday brunch series.

The program, "Jewish Identity in the Families We Choose" is slated for 10 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 17 at Coyote Springs Brewing Company, 122 E. Washington St., Phoenix.

KTAR radio talk show host Bill Straus will moderate the discussion, which will focus on single parent, interfaith, single adult and blended families, and gay and lesbian couples and singles.

Panelists include Rabbi Maynard Bell of Temple Solel and Rabbi Rick Sherwin of Beth El Congregation.

Steve Berger, chair of the AJC Jewish Communal Affairs Committee, said the relaxed setting has been selected to "encourage dialogue to explore the deep issues of the varieties of Jewish families in the 1990s.

"It is our hope," Berger said, "that the discussion will lead to a stronger Jewish identification and a positive response to the needs of these Jews in our community."

Cosponsoring the event with AJC are Jewish Family and Children's Service and Aviv, an organization for Jewish lesbians and gay men.

Cost is $18. Kosher meals are available by early reservation.

Persons interested in participating can make reservations by calling 248-8845.
