December 24, 1999/15 Tevet 5760, Vol. 52, No.17
Temple to honor education directorTemple Solel in Paradise Valley will honor Director of Education Bonnie Morris for her 10 years of service to the congregation during Shabbat services Jan. 7, and with a special program Jan. 9."It's a little overwhelming, really," Morris said about the recognition. "Time has gone by very, very quickly. I pretty much view the weekend as a celebration of what can happen in a healthy synagogue setting when lay leadership and staff work together." The Jan. 9 program will begin at 5 p.m. and will include hors d'oeuvres and dessert. The cost is $18, 3 percent of which will be donated to MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger. To attend, call 480-991-7414. Morris joined Temple Solel, 6805 E. McDonald Drive, in 1989, after moving from Pennsylvania to Phoenix "kicking and screaming" because of her then new husband's job. Roger Morris is a partner in the Streich Lang law firm and heads the firm's health-care practice group. Bonnie Morris was born in Providence, R.I., but her family moved to Massachusetts when she was still young. Morris grew up "in a very observant household" and comes from 36 generations of Orthodox rabbis. She says that, if the option had been available to her, she "probably would have gone in that direction, too. As a female, this was never an option." After high school, Morris lived in Israel for seven years, where she earned a master's degree in education from Hebrew University in Jerusalem. She is currently working on a second master's degree, in educational administration at the University of Phoenix. She is the mother of three children: Stephanie, 14; Erica, 8; and Rebecca, 7. |
