A teen who makes a differenceAmanda Masliah of Scottsdale is the winner of this year's Anne Frank "Teens Make a Difference" Scholarship Award.The Women's Department of the Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix presented the award at a dessert reception on the evening of May 5 at a private home. Guest speaker was Helen Handler, who spoke to the finalists and other guests about her perspective as a Holocaust survivor and the role of young people today. The award recognizes the outstanding volunteer achievements of Jewish youth, and seeks to enhance community awareness of the positive contributions of youth to the community, both Jewish and general. Amanda is a junior at Desert Mountain High School, and has been involved in a wide range of community service activities. These include volunteering with Camp Swift, a summer camp for economically disadvantaged children; Palomino Elementary School; The Bureau of Jewish Education; The Council for Jews with Special Needs; and a major educational project on the issue of worldwide child slavery for Temple Chai Temple Youth. The other 2005 finalists were Abigail Abraham, Phoenix Country Day School; Carly Glick, Coronado del Sol High School; Stephanie Jerzy, Pinnacle High School; Erin Katz, Xavier College Preparatory High School; Jamie Leibovitz, Saguaro High School; and Lauren Rosenblum, Chaparral High School. |
