Synagogue starts new fund for community education

The New Shul in Scottsdale has created an education fund in honor of one of its founders and Jewish community leaders, who will soon relocate to Florida.

The Jack Kugelmass Education Fund is designed to help continue the legacy of Jack Kugelmass, the director of the Jewish Studies Program at Arizona State University who, after seven years at ASU, has accepted the position of director of the Center for Jewish Studies at the University of Florida, according to Rabbi Michael Wasserman of The New Shul.

"One of the wonderful things he has done has been to bring high-level Jewish learning into the Jewish community through visiting lecturers," said Wasserman. "We want to continue to bring high-quality visiting lecturers into The New Shul for the benefit of the community as a whole."

The New Shul will hold a "farewell reception and evening of learning" 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, May 11, at a private home in honor of Kugelmass, who will begin his new position at the University of Florida in July. A suggested donation of $180 or more to The New Shul Jack Kugelmass Education Fund is requested.

The reception and education fund are a way to honor Kugelmass, said Wasserman. "To learn from him one last time."
