Moms

A special gift for a special lady

Mothers do it all: they cook, clean, take care of the family (and that's just before 10 a.m.). This Mother's Day, on May 8, choose a special gift that lets her know she's truly appreciated.

The eyes have it

Mother's Day is made in the shade with Coach designer eyewear from Nationwide Vision. The Sandy sunglasses are '70s-retro oversized shades in a hip burgundy hue, while the striped tortoiseshell Lindsay glasses exude a funky, urban attitude. Both pairs of sunglasses block 100 percent of harmful UV radiation and are available for $170 each.

Nationwide Vision carries a wide selection of designer frames from name-brand companies like Anne Klein, Brooks Brothers, Christian Dior and more. Visit www.nationwidevision.com for locations and phone numbers.

Gather 'round the table

For the woman who loves to cook, consider two fabulous new cookbooks that give Jewish cooking a global perspective. "Jewish Food: The World at Table" (HarperCollins, $29.95 hardcover) by Matthew Goodman is an informative and stylish look at the varieties of Jewish cuisine. Goodman intersperses mouthwatering recipes like Latkes de Patata (Mexican Potato Pancakes with Carrots and Corn) and Shorba Bi Djaj (Iraqi Creamy Chicken Soup with Rice) with fascinating articles on Jewish communities around the world and the main ingredients of Jewish cooking.

Also, try "Classic Italian Jewish Cooking" (HarperCollins $29.95 hardcover) by Edda Servi Machlin, an irresistible book filled with delicious ideas for the next family dinner. Recipes like Squash Ravioli with Sage Oil, Garlic Bread Soup and Lamb, Meatballs and Spinach for Passover represent the best of Italian and Jewish cuisine. Bon appetit!

Lifetime learning

If you know a mom who loves to learn, sign her up for one of many classes and activities available at the Desert Botanical Garden. There's something for everyone, from gardening workshops to yoga sessions.

For the artistic mother and child, try the "Memory Mosaic Stepping Stone" workshop on Saturday, May 7. Together, mom and her child will create a family keepsake by adorning a concrete stepping stone with broken tile, glass beads and clay pieces. Participants are encouraged to bring shells, stones or jewelry they wish to incorporate in this special work of art. Cost is $88.

A woman who's into relaxation would enjoy the "T'ai Chi in the Garden" series. Participants learn the ancient Chinese art of T'ai Chi among the wildflowers and desert plants. The beginner's class is held Wednesday mornings May 18-June 22. Cost is $50. Call 480-941-1225 or visit www.dbg.org.

Jewelry from the heart

Two lovely necklaces from the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City are a perfect gift for a mom with an appreciation of jewelry. The Menorah Pendant necklace is based on a glass original that dates back to the third-sixth century C.E. The sterling silver pendant depicts the seven-branch menorah from the destroyed Temple of Jerusalem and hangs from a string of cultured freshwater pearls. Cost is $85.

The Ahava "Love" Pendant is a miniature version of an original 13-foot steel sculpture created by Robert Indiana that features the Hebrew letters for the word "love." The necklace is available for $120 in 14-carat gold with 24-carat gold plate, or $28 in sterling silver. Visit www.metmuseum.org.

Gifts in good taste

When in doubt, give chocolate. Godiva has created beautiful gift boxes for Mother's Day. The Photo Keepsake Gift Box is a gorgeous lavender-and-blue box filled with more than one pound of assorted chocolates and truffles. When the goodies are gone, she can use the box to store photos, greeting cards and more. Cost is $45.

Or, give the Lady Godiva 2005 Limited Edition Tin gift set. More than one pound of Godiva's delicious offerings are set into a beautifully illustrated tin bearing Russian artist Misha Lenn's stunning interpretation of the Lady Godiva legend. Cost is $60. Visit www.godiva.com.

Tea for two (or more)

Take Mom out on the town for a beautiful afternoon at the Phoenix Art Museum. The museum is holding Mother's Day Teas 1:30-4:30 p.m. Saturday, April 30, and Saturday, May 7, in the museum cafe. You and Mom will enjoy live musical performances, sandwiches and canapĒs, heart-shaped cakes and much more along with a variety of imported traditional and herbal teas, lemonade, pink champagne cocktails, mimosas and more.

Since admission to the museum is included in the $25 cost of the tea, be sure check out the museum's exhibition "In Monet's Light: Theodore Robinson at Giverny." Mother's Day weekend is the last opportunity to see this beautiful collection of American Impressionist work and a few canvasses by Monet himself. The museum is located at 1625 N. Central Ave., Phoenix. Call 602-257-2191.

Queen for a day

Every mother deserves to be treated like royalty. The Arizona Biltmore Resort and Spa in Phoenix is offering a "Queen for a Day Spa Package" for the special mom in your life.

The package includes a 50-minute Relaxation Lavender Massage, a choice of a Desert Elements Facial or an Aromatherapy Manicure and Pedicure, and a spa gift. The Desert Elements Facial rescues skin from the daily effects of the dry Arizona climate with a healing treatment featuring indigenous flowers, native fruits and pineapple enzymes.

Cost for the "Queen for a Day" package is $275. Call 602-381-7632, or visit www.arizonabiltmeore.com.

Laugh it up

Tickle her funny bone with a great new DVD collection. The "Classic Comedies" box set includes six great films from the golden age of moviemaking: "Bringing Up Baby," "The Philadelphia Story," "Stage Door," "Dinner at Eight," "Libeled Lady" and "To Be or Not to Be."

The highlights of the box set are the new two-disc special editions of Katharine Hepburn classics "Bringing Up Baby" and "The Philadelphia Story" - each film is digitally remastered and accompanied with documentaries about the stars and directors. The suggested retail price for the entire set is around $70.

If musicals are more Mom's style, try the "Classic Musicals Collection Cole Porter Gift Set," with five great titles - "High Society," "Kiss Me Kate," "Broadway Melody of 1940," "Les Girls" and "Silk Stockings." Cost is approximately $60. Visit www.amazon.com.
