Local Jewish youth honored in national essay contestMoriah Kandi Greathouse, a 12-year-old Tempe resident, was recently honored as the state finalist in a nationwide essay competition presented by the Library of Congress.Greathouse, a sixth-grader at East Valley JCC Day School in Tempe, received first place in Arizona in the "Letters About Literature" contest's "Level 1" category for grades four-six. Participants write a personal letter to any fiction or nonfiction author, living or dead, explaining how the author's work has transformed how they perceive the world and themselves. Educators, authors, publishers and librarians from across the country judged the essays. Greathouse wrote to Newbery Medal-winning author Jerry Spinelli last October about his 2002 young adult novel "Loser." She received a $100 cash prize. More than 46,000 students from across the country participated in the competition, which was sponsored by The Center for the Book in the Library of Congress, writing to such authors as J.R.R. Tolkien and J.K. Rowling. |
