Chelsea Taylor Carpenter, daughter of Cindy and Jim Carpenter of Scottsdale, will become a bat mitzvah April 16, 2005, at Temple Chai.

Grandparents are Arlene and Jerry Lehman of Scottsdale; and Lois and Bob Carpenter of Omaha, Neb.

Chelsea is a student at Copper Ridge Middle School. Her hobbies are cheerleading and swimming.

For her mitzvah project, Chelsea fed the homeless and volunteered with the Council For Jews With Special Needs.



Justin Andrew Germaine, son of Sherri and Sandy Germaine of Phoenix, will become a bar mitzvah April 16, 2005, at Temple Kol Ami.

Grandparents are Rita and Ralph Segal of Phoenix; Bernice Germaine of Scottsdale; and the late Maurice Germaine.

Justin is a student at All Saints' Episcopal Day School. His hobby is basketball.

For his mitzvah project, Justin volunteered with Andre House, Camp Harmony, and New Day Center.



Matthew Ryan Hellman, son of Lucy Hellman and Marc Hellman of Phoenix, will become a bar mitzvah April 16, 2005, at Temple Chai.

Grandparents are Luz Orta of Miami, the late Pedro Orta; and the late Bea and Al Hellman.

Matthew attends Shea Middle School. His hobbies are creating wood models, golf and basketball.

For his mitzvah project, Matthew collected and distributed grooming aids to seniors in need.



Jeremy Ian Katz, son of Cindy and Jeffrey Katz of Phoenix, will become a bar mitzvah April 16, 2005, at Temple Chai.

Grandparents are Judith and Terry Hughes of Surprise; and Marion Weinzweig of Phoenix.

Jeremy attends Shea Middle School. His hobbies are drawing, photography, soccer and judo.

For his mitzvah project, Jeremy collected stuffed animals for the Phoenix Fire Department to distribute to injured children.



Rachel Lea Kozinn, daughter of Jill and Stuart Kozinn of Scottsdale, will become a bat mitzvah April 16, 2005, at Temple Solel.

Grandparents are Elaine and Harold Kozinn of Scottsdale; Beverly Miller of Woodmere, N.Y.; and the late Roy Carter.

Rachel attends Ingelside Middle School. Her hobbies are soccer, volleyball and art.

For her mitzvah project, Rachel worked on projects to support autistic children.



Jade Alexandra Bettine, daughter of Laura and Dale Bettine of Queen Creek, will become a bat mitzvah April 16, 2005, at Temple Solel.

Grandparents are Samuel Kay of Las Vegas; Pat and Charles Bettine of Pittsburgh; and the late Judith Kay.

Great-grandparents are the late Francis and Samuel Passekoff; and the late Rose and Benjamin Kay.

Jade attends Power Ranch Middle School. Her hobbies are horseback riding, participating in 4-H and writing.

For her mitzvah project, Jade submitted a story to a children's book publisher, with all proceeds going to cancer research.



Derek Ernest Newman, son of Carol and Bruce Newman of Paradise Valley, will become a bar mitzvah April 16, 2005, at Har Zion Congregation.

Grandparents are Roslyn Zencker of Scottsdale; Seymour Newman of Delray Beach, Fla.; the late Ernest Zencker; and the late Corinne Newman.

Derek attends Cocopah Middle School. His hobbies are building models, drawing, and creating cartoons with Macromedia Flash.

For his mitzvah project, Derek held a blood and bone marrow donor drive.



Joseph Sandler Svetly, son of Andrea and Andrew Svetly of Paradise Valley, will become a bar mitzvah April 16, 2005, at Temple Beth Israel.

Grandparents are Diane and Stephen Sandler of Phoenix; Rose Svetly of Los Angeles; and the late Joseph Svetly.

Joseph attends The King David School. His hobbies are computers, reading, tennis, technology and basketball.

For his mitzvah project, Joseph made a donation to Crisis Nursery and volunteered at Kivel Campus of Care, including helping with Shabbat services and assisting with its new computer system.



Yael Arbel, daughter of Ana and Michael Arbel of Scottsdale, became a bat mitzvah March 19, 2005, at Temple Chai.

Grandparents are Irene and Oscar Levinton of Buenos Aires, Argentina; the late Shoshana Kulesar; and the late Gabriel Arbel.

Yael attends Desert Shadows Middle School. Her hobbies are dancing and singing.

For her mitzvah project, Yael tutored children at Palomino Elementary School.
