Tour de Solel bike ride raises $22,000 for scholarshipsTemple Solel congregants raised $22,000 for religious school scholarships during its first Tour de Solel bike ride, held on April 3.Thirty-five riders of all ages followed Rabbi Alan Berlin on two 25-kilometer courses from the Paradise Valley synagogue through McCormick Ranch neighborhoods, then back to the synagogue and up Mummy Mountain. Longtime congregant Judy Schaffert started the "Cycling for Scholars" campaign to raise funds for the Herbert and Eleanor Gordon Scholarship Fund and The Willard Abraham Memorial Fund. As part of the campaign, congregants were asked to ride, volunteer or pledge funds. Congregant Sam Denmark pledged a matching grant of up to $10,000. Together, two teams -Rabbi's Riders, led by Berlin, and Patti's Pathfinders, led by Executive Director Patti Evans - raised $12,000. The $22,000 will go toward scholarships for member children to attend the temple's Raker Religious School. |
